Background: The life of a Victorian constable (also known as a Bobby or a Peeler ) was not easy. He was expected to walk a beat of 20 miles no matter the weather seven days a week, never to sit down or lean against anything and if he was unlucky on night duty and caught a criminal he had to escort said person to jail and appear in court the next day. For all this he got paid only 54 pounds 12s for his effort and a day off every fortnight. In fact a number of constables were not killed by thugs but by tuberculosis. While he could look forward toward a pension, any minor violation of protocol, even if it was one time at the beginning of 20 year career, was enough of a reason for the commissioner to deny it.

The constable, at the beginning of his career was above average physical condition and in good health, even though generally by the end his health was a wreck and his feet and leg bad because poor shoeing. Police force also had stringent rules on who could become a constable. This could be anywhere from height requirements (5'9" to 6' being the most likely range), age range (18 to 27) and having no more then 2 children.

General Facts
Night Duty was from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am. Initially this was about half the force but was later reduced to only a third.
The Whistle was not introduced until 1884 and in some places not until the 1890s
The Rattle which was introduced before the whistle, was hard to get out in an emergency and could be used as a weapon against the constable.
Constable could not vote until 1887 to keep them out of politics
The could be dismissed from duty because of the complaint from a member of the public, late for duty, poor appearance, leaving their beat or drinking (the most common one)

This represent a young and healthy constable. For an older member of the force reduce movement, physical stats, and/or Recovery to indicate reduced health.
